Women’s reasons for caring are more complicated than simple altruism or even more sophisticated ideas of reciprocity between genererations, their feelings about caring can be profoundly ambivalent and their needs correspond- ingly complex. Support for the supporters can only be effective if there is greater understanding of the nature of the primary caring relationship and the place it occupies in the carer’s life.
