Customers pay for electricity in a similar manner to prepay mobile phones. They maintain a positive credit balance by “topping up” their account (predominantly over the counter at retail outlets). The balance reduces daily as they use electricity – at $0, the power automatically disconnects at midday. The in home display (IHD) provides up to date information on the customer’s balance.

iMonitor won the GLO-BUG RFP which called for a solution that was low in cost to scale to meet aggressive company growth plans. Reaching targeted costs was only one objective, another key objective was the design of a product that will help to minimize the negative feelings the end user would harbour towards a device that inevitably brings bad news. In order to function as expected the GLO-BUG also needed to be strong enough to cope with user neglect & abuse.
